What is Chichester Fringe 2023?

The short answer is in the name; Chichester Fringe 2023 is… an arts fringe taking place in Chichester, in 2023!

From 1 - 18 June, performers from all walks of life will bring their unique skills and acts to Chichester, West Sussex, showcasing their work in various local participating venues. From theatre to dance, music to spoken word and more, Chichester Fringe 2023 is sure to have something for everyone.

Chichester Fringe 2023 is free to take part in and is a volunteer-run event.

How did Chichester Fringe start?

Chichester Fringe was created in 2021 in direct response to the Covid-19 pandemic, through the recognition that performers should be given a safe space to perform, as well as to provide entertainment for audiences far and wide.

It originally took place via livestream from The Vicars Hall, Chichester, and in 2022 there was a series of hybrid online/in-person events taking place throughout the city.

What's on at Chichester Fringe 2023?

The finer details of the 2023 fringe are still being finalised, with submissions open now for performers, theatre/dance groups and musicians to submit an application, so we’re not able to say just yet!

But we can say for certain that we’ll be expanding on last year’s fringe. As before, we welcome theatre groups, dancers, comedians, poets and more to venues around the city.

Performing at Chichester Fringe was such an incredible experience. Everyone was so lovely to work with and so attentive throughout the day. I’d 100% come back again next year!

We’ve had everything from one-act plays through to hilarious comedy sets and intimate music sessions, and we’re really excited to host many more in 2023.

Where are events hosted?

There’s lots of venues taking part in our 2023 fringe, and we’re thrilled to be partnering with various ones across the city. They include:

These venues are a huge part of what makes Chichester Fringe unique. We have traditional theatre spaces, like a converted chapel with a stage, combined with open air venues, cafes and of course our canal boat. There’ll be entertainment that’s accessible for all.

Where is Chichester?

Chichester is located in West Sussex, just a short drive from the beautiful south coast. We’re only 90 minutes from central London on the train and there’s plenty of public transport to help you get around our historic city, with lots to see and do!

Chichester has a rich history, with its roots dating back to Roman times, and as the only cathedral city in Sussex. Chichester Festival Theatre is renowned around the country, too, well known as a powerhouse of independent theatre, regularly producing West End transfer hits. Chichester, therefore, is the ideal place to play host to an arts fringe. Find out more about Chichester on Discover Sussex.
