About the show

A night of relevant and contemporary poetry with a mission to show how cool poetry can be.

A memorable evening for poetry and non-poetry fans, showing off the power, entertainment and hilarity of life using just words.

This evening is brought to you by local poet Ryan Burle and Chichester Fringe, with the help of their friends, the Chichester Canal Trust.

About the artists

Poets: Ryan Burle, Charlie Rosse & Brenda Figg.

Ryan Burle is a spoken word poet and author of his self published poetry collection ‘Write Flight or Freeze’, which explores mental health and the human condition. His most recent projects include performing at Victorious music festival and co-producing ‘To Find the Words’ a spoken word video shot in and around Brixton.

Ryan created ‘Poets on the Canal with Chichester Fringe to bring performance opportunities to local poets while aiming to embed poetry further into the fabric of Chichester. Ryan can also be seen on the streets with his typewriter creating bespoke poems in a busking style project called ‘Poems for Strangers.’ Ryan also regularly performs with local spoken word company ‘Words out Loud.’

Aside from poetry, Ryan is the co-host of a topical, comicaland informative podcast on Spotify named A Couple of CANT’S that explores the topic of adult ADHD. He is also a regular member of the Toastmasters International accredited public speaking club Arun Speakers and is hoping to compete in public speaking competitions this year.

Charlie Rosse is a spoken word poet who performs her fun, conversational poetry in venues around the country. Most recently she has performed at Chichester Festival Theatre, BBC Radio, Victorious Music Festival and Brighton Pride. She has been shortlisted for Best Poem of 2024 in the Wordplay Awards and last year came third in her heat of Brighton’s Hammer and Tongue slam poetry competition. On top of performing, Charlie provides a platform for others to showcase their poetry, running a poetry discussion group in London that was featured in Harper’s Bazaar.

In addition to poetry, Charlie also writes features for a number of national publications, reviews theatre and has completed her first novel. She is currently exploring the avenues towards literary representation.

Brenda Figg is a poet and self confessed over-thinker who began writing to heal after Covid-19 and she hasn’t stopped writing since! Brenda is an advocate of writing not only for healing but also for fun. It all began when a friend invited her to attend a local spoken word evening by the company ‘Words Out Loud’ in Chichester. Now a regular on the scene, they can’t get rid of her! Brenda has performed numerous times with Words Out Loud and recently at the Weald and Downland Museum as part of their ‘Flower Power’ event. Brenda is very excited for her next performance adventure at Poets on the Canal.
